Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable designed to improve the appearance of double chins by destroying fat cells. It uses deoxycholic acid, a man-made version of a naturally occurring substance that aids in fat absorption. Kybella treatment is quick, involves minimal downtime, and permanently eliminates fat cells. The fat cells’ membranes are disrupted, and over about four to six weeks, the body naturally processes and reduces the fat deposits.

In clinical trials, even patients who gained weight after Kybella treatment did not experience a return of fat in the treated areas.

Kybella can also be used to target small pockets of fat in other areas of the body, such as the jowls, bra bulge, and inner thighs.

Jowls

Jowls are the sagging areas of flesh along the lower face caused by a loss of elastin and collagen. Kybella injections target and permanently destroy the fat cells in these areas, effectively eliminating jowls and providing long-lasting results.

Bra Bulge

Bra bulge refers to stubborn pockets of fat located just under the armpits. This area can be challenging to address with diet and exercise alone, but Kybella can help! During the treatment, Kybella is injected into the targeted areas under the arms to permanently eliminate fat cells and reduce the bra bulge. Results are permanent.

Inner Thighs

Kybella is injected into the inner thighs to permanently eliminate fat cells, offering a subtle but noticeable improvement for slimmer legs. Typically, 2-3 vials per side are used per session. Results are permanent.

How does KYBELLA® work?

According to the KYBELLA® website, “The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is synthetic deoxycholic acid, a molecule naturally found in the body that helps break down and absorb dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA® targets and destroys fat cells, leading to a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. Once these fat cells are eliminated, they cannot store or accumulate fat, so additional treatments are typically unnecessary once your aesthetic goals are achieved.

When will I see results?

Visible results are typically seen within 60-90 days.

How long do results last?

As stated on the KYBELLA® website, ‘When injected into the fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells. Once these cells are eliminated, they cannot store or accumulate fat. Therefore, no further treatment is typically needed once you achieve your desired aesthetic results.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of KYBELLA® treatments needed varies by patient. Your healthcare specialist will assess the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your treatment goals to determine the appropriate number of sessions. Each treatment is spaced at least one month apart, with a maximum of 6 treatments recommended. In clinical studies, 59% of patients received all 6 treatments.

Will I need time to recover?

Bruising and swelling are common after KYBELLA® treatment. It’s best to allow at least 2 weeks before any events or vacations.

Following KYBELLA® treatment, some swelling, bruising, or numbness under the chin is typical. Notify your healthcare professional if you experience an uneven smile, facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or issues at the injection site such as bruising, hair loss, open sores (ulcers), or tissue damage. Contact your healthcare provider if you notice open sores or drainage from the treated area.
